Excess and surplus stock buyers for New Zealand

Coorey and Co buys excess and surplus stock from New Zealand businesses. We're based in Sydney and work with NZ sellers by phone and email. Send a stock list and photos, and in most cases we'll make an offer for the whole parcel. The stock doesn't have to come to Australia.

New Zealand businesses sell surplus stock to us, and the stock doesn't need to cross the Tasman for it to work. Coorey and Co has been buying and selling excess stock for over 30 years, from anywhere in Australia, from New Zealand and internationally. In most cases we buy the whole parcel ourselves and resell it through our own network of retailers, discount chains, wholesalers, distributors, charities and overseas buyers.

We don't have a New Zealand office. John Coorey works from Parramatta, Sydney, by phone and email. For most parcels, that's all it takes.

Can an Australian company buy surplus stock in New Zealand?

Yes. We've done it many times. The best example is one of our favourite deals:

We bought 19 containers of washing powder in New Zealand and sold them to Singapore, without meeting the buyer or the seller.

The stock never came to Australia. It went from New Zealand to the buyer. That's the point: we buy your stock and find it a home wherever the buyer is, so the location of your warehouse matters less than you might think. Anything is possible!

Why would a New Zealand business sell to an Australian buyer?

Because a small home market has limits. New Zealand has fewer large discount and clearance buyers than Australia, and they all know each other. A parcel offered around locally can quickly become common knowledge, and a cheap line in one store can undercut your full-price range in another.

A buyer with contacts in Australia and overseas gives you:

  • More places for the stock to go, including markets where your brand doesn't compete.
  • Discretion. We survey the market quietly and don't advertise your brand's stock publicly.
  • One sale instead of many. In most cases we offer for the whole parcel.
  • Control. We follow your rules on where the stock can and can't be sold.

What kinds of New Zealand businesses sell us stock?

The same kinds as in Australia: importers and distributors with stock left over after a cancelled order, food and beverage producers with overruns or packaging changes, manufacturers with discontinued lines, retailers clearing ranges, and administrators and liquidators realising stock from a business in difficulty.

Every now and again, consumer goods companies run into excess stock problems, often for reasons outside their control: cancelled orders, wrong packaging, a shift in market trends. It happens on both sides of the Tasman.

How does selling surplus stock from NZ work?

  1. Email your stock list to john@coorey.com: SKU, description, quantity, cost or RRP if you're happy to share, best-before or expiry dates, and where the stock is.
  2. Send photos of the product, cartons and labels, and say how it's packed (pallets, containers, loose cartons).
  3. Talk to John by phone or email about why the stock is surplus, where it can and can't be sold, and your timing.
  4. John discreetly surveys the market to find out what it's worth.
  5. In most cases, he makes an offer for the lot. If buying it all isn't possible, he'll give you his best advice on how to sell it.
  6. Collection or delivery is agreed per parcel. Depending on the buyer, the stock may ship straight from New Zealand to wherever it's going.
  7. Payment is made promptly, as per our agreed terms.

There are no broker fees. We buy the stock ourselves and resell it, so we don't charge you to broker it or advise you.

How do you protect my brand?

These are our four guarantees:

  1. "We strictly follow your guidelines in relation to pricing and distribution locations."
  2. "We send payment promptly, as per our agreed terms."
  3. "We place a priority focus on clearing your stock."
  4. "We speedily and discreetly convert your stock into cash at the highest possible price, without damaging your market position."

If you want your stock kept out of New Zealand, out of Australia, or out of specific retailers, tell us at the start and we'll build the deal around it. Our guide on protecting your brand when clearing stock explains the options in more detail.

What about cross-border paperwork and tax?

Moving goods between countries can involve customs, biosecurity and labelling rules, and selling stock below cost can have tax consequences. These depend on the product and where it's going, so we work them through per parcel. For tax treatment of your stock, talk to your accountant.

What stock do you buy?

Most consumer goods. Over 30 years we've bought and sold food, soft drinks, confectionery, dried fruit, coffee, personal care, cosmetics, nappies, clothing, shoes, toys, licensed products, electrical products, batteries, paint, adhesive tapes, cleaning products and much more. Other big jobs include 37 semi-trailers of short-dated orange juice and 27 semi-trailers of a discontinued paint product. Read more about the kinds of surplus stock we deal with.

There's no minimum size. John likes small parcels, because a small parcel sometimes leads to a big one.

Does the time difference cause problems?

Not really. New Zealand is only a couple of hours ahead of Sydney for most of the year, so there's plenty of overlap in the working day. Email works well for the detail: the stock list, photos and any restrictions. A phone call then fills in the gaps. Most of the work of valuing a parcel happens on our side, quietly, while you get on with running your business.

Frequently asked questions

Do you pay in New Zealand dollars or Australian dollars?

Currency and payment method are agreed as part of the deal. We send payment promptly, as per our agreed terms.

Do you have an office in New Zealand?

No. Our office is in Parramatta, Sydney. We buy from New Zealand by phone and email, and have done so for years.

What's the best way to call you from New Zealand?

Call John on +61 411 430 047, or email john@coorey.com. Email is often easiest across time zones, and a stock list gives us something to work from before we talk.

Can you keep my stock out of the New Zealand market?

Yes, if that's what you need. We strictly follow your guidelines on pricing and distribution locations, so stock can go to buyers in other countries.

Do you buy from the South Island as well as Auckland?

Yes. We buy from anywhere in New Zealand. Tell us where the stock is and how it's packed, and we'll work out the logistics with you.
